Statement on President Obama's Plan to Close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Westwood) issued the following statement after President Obama announced plans to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility:

"With this plan, President Obama has shown once again that he is not only unwilling to stand up for the safety of the American people, he is also unwilling to follow the law-even one he signed into law as recently as three months ago. The National Defense Authorization Act for FY16, which passed both chambers with overwhelming, bipartisan support and, again, was signed by the President, is clear: such a transfer of detainees from Guantanamo Bay to American soil is a threat to our national security and will not be allowed.  Any transfer without Congressional approval is a willful violation of the law and an overreach of executive power. We in Congress will not compromise our security for a misguided campaign pledge."
