Washington, DC – Today, Representative Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) and Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Freedom of the Press Caucus, released the following statement in response to Apple Daily’s announcement that it would print its final addition on Thursday June 24, 2021:
“Today marks another sad milestone for Hong Kong, as Apple Daily, the city’s only remaining pro-democracy print newspaper, published its final edition. It is deeply disturbing that authorities have arrested the paper’s executives, raided its offices, and frozen its assets, leading to the shutdown of one of the city’s largest newspapers. Unfortunately, it is clear that Hong Kong has lost its long-held freedom of the press as China cracks down on free speech in all corners.
“We all condemn Beijing’s actions against the people of Hong Kong and their democratic society, a central pillar of which is the freedom of the press. These are not merely China’s internal affairs, but decisions that reverberate around the world, signaling once again that in Beijing’s view, the people’s rights are merely gifts of the state, to be taken away at a moment’s notice. We will continue to stand with the journalists in China, and around the world, who seek to report the truth in the face of such state-sponsored persecution.”
