Reps. Chabot and Lowenthal release statement on the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's visit to Burma

Washington, D.C. – Today, Reps. Steve Chabot (R-OH) and Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Cambodia Caucus, issued the following statement on the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s visit to Burma:

“Prime Minister Hun Sen’s decision to visit Burma undermines ASEAN credibility and diminishes its leverage to bring an end to the ongoing crisis,” the Co-Chairs said. “This is especially so since the Tatmadaw has so far blatantly ignored ASEAN’s concerns regarding its illegitimate actions. Further, Hun Sen’s decision to bypass ASEAN’s agreed-on process toward Burma without consensus is unbecoming of the leader of the nation that is currently leading the group. Legitimizing the junta will only make the problem worse and decrease the likelihood for lasting peace in Burma.”
